  specifieke technieken zoals röntgendiagnostische technieken (thoraxfoto, CT-scan), endoscopische ultrasonografie (echoscopie) via slokdarm of luchtpijp met de mogelijkheid om naaldpunctie van klieren in het mediastinum te doen, MRI, skeletscintigrafie (botscan), bronchoscopie gecombineerd met een biopt (transbronchiaal), cytologisch onderzoek van sputum (papanicolaoumethode);
