Eerdere neutrale / positieve ervaringen met stimulus situatie (CS) inhibeert CS-US en verkleint kans dat één traumatische ervaring (US) tot fobie leidt:

• Bijv. tandarts patiënten met geschiedenis van pijnlijke behandelingen en géén fobie: latente inhibitie (Davey, 1989)
  
• Latente inhibitie is doorgedrongen in tandarts praktijk!!
