Zawahiri went for several months as a doctor to Afghanistan. Het met the mujahideen (the holy warriors).  Back in Cairo he began recruiting for jihad at the universities. Zawahiri  saw the Afgan jihad as a training course to prepare the Muslim mujahideen.
