What does the methodology say?
  • Children aquire L2 (according to Krashen).
  • Teacher should speak in target language all the time.

What do the theories say?

  • Hyltenstain's Age of Onset: Children can no longer aquire a language after the age of onset (12 years).
  • James Cummins' Critical Period Hypothesis: the first few years of life is the crucial time in which an individual can acquire a first language if presented with adequate stimuli. If language input doesn't occur until after this time, the individual will never achieve a full command of language—especially grammatical systems. Fossilization: a stage of a second language learner where he/she can no longer master certain parts of language.
  • Forkhead Box Protein P2 (FoxP2): gene responsible for language aquisition.
