One potential mechanism for Fe - Ni separation or segregation is that the metal melts and forms an interconnected network. If the melt is able to interconnect between the silicate grains, the rate of migration can be quite rapid (Question 2.4 ? 290 km y-1). The question is though, how well  the metal can connect.
