On the basis of DNA, prokaryotes are divided into two distinct phylogenetic branches: the Bacteria end the Archaea. Both are called seperate empires, or domains, of life.
Archaea are more closely related to the Eukarya than to the Bacteria. See FE Figure 2.1 (p.18).
