Dates 1860 - 1890
Characteristics:
- Applying pain in small touches.
- Painting out of doors.
- focus on effects of colour and light

3. Post impressionism
Dates 1880 -1910
Characteristics - not really a school, just reaction against the naturalism of impressionism. Two trends impressionism which influenced modern art.
Trend one, emphasis on form, muted colour and simplification led to cubism
Trend two _ emphasis on vivid colour and distorted form  to express inner feeling.
Artists : Cexanne - emphasis on formal beauty led to cubism
Gauguin Van Gogh Munch - emphasis on vivid colour distorted form to express inner feelings - led to expressionism.
