Komatiites are rare ultramafic lavas that were produced most commonly during the Archean. They have a high MgO content and olivines showing a spinifex texture (elongated, skeletal, braching crystals). Water played a role in their formation and from this we may conclude that the Archaean mantle was only slightly hotter than the present day. (Box 2.5)
