How do things get launched when we're talking about searching through memory? One part lies in the link that tie the memory network directly to the mechanisms of perception. Some nodes within the net are input nodes. They receive activation via associative links; once triggered, they send activation to other noeds. What is special about these input nodes, though, is that they receive most of their input activation from appropirate detectors, with these in turn being connected to the eyes, ears. The key idea is that perceiving and identifying an input will involve, among other steps, the locating and activating of that input's node in the network. Perceiving itself, will launch memory search.
