Eukaryotes include all organisms, both single-celled and multicellular, whose cells possess a membrane-bounded nucleus - containing genetic material present in thread-like chromosomes - and cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria.
The prokaryotes, by contrast, lack a nucleus and possess only a single (though usually much-folded) loop of DNA. They are also typically single-celled, much smaller than eukaryotes and lack organelles.
