Essentialism is the idea that for any given category of things, such as a species, there is an ideal, fixed form, or 'essence', such that variation is regarded merely as accidental imperfection. Such a view is inconsistent with evolutionary theory, which recognises that variation within species populations is the only real phenomenon, and essence just a figment of our imaginations.
