9. Constructivism (and supremacism)
Dates 1915-1945
Originally a Russian Avant garde movement  with close  ties to Malevich's supremacist period, constuctivisim spread though the Western World and was the dominant form of modernist (rather than expressionist) art until the end of the second world war. veryinfluential in the Bauhaus and De Stijl.


Characteristics of  constuctivism


- rejected art for art's sake ( the autonomy of Art Burger) and saw art as pactical tool dor society. During Russian revolution were involbved with propoganda, graphic design and cinema. This trend in constuctivism where art and design was for the masses was called productivism.
- first purely abstract and non-figurative school. Geometric, formal and unemotional. Realted to non expressionist modernist painting such as cubism-
- Concern with the use of space. Led to new media such as installations and linear sculptures. .
