4 types of mergers or takeovers:

1. A merge or takeover in the same industry. For example an oilcompany taking over another oilcompany. We call that a horizontal merge/takeover.

2. Vertical integration. Whenever a company acquires the manufacturer or a manufacturer takes over a retail store. Example a dairy farm taking over cheese processing plant.

3. Acquirer and target operate in different lines of business. For example a soft drink manufacturer taking over a candy manufacturer. Horizontal integration

4. Conglomerate acquisition. When 2 different companies in different industries work together. You do not see this that much anymore nowadays. Because it turned out to be very hard to control by one centralized management.
